5 Books I’Ve Been Obsessed With Lately

I’ve always loved reading and this summer I had a lot of free time to catch up on all the books I wanted to read, here are the ones I loved the most:

1. The Shadow Of The Wind – Carlo Ruiz Zafón

This novel written in 2001 by Spanish writer Carlo Ruiz Zafón will literally take your breath away.

Set in Barcelona after the Civil War, this book follows the story of Daniel, a Spanish teenager, who discovers a forgotten book called The Shadow Of The Wind written by Juliàn Carax.

Daniel is fascinated by the book and wants to know more about this author who didn’t get the popularity he deserved but as he discovers dark secrets about Carax’s life, his own life starts looking strangely similar.

I could not stop reading this book and read it in just a few days, the plot twists, the shocking discoveries, you won’t regret reading this amazing novel!

2. Never Let Me Go – Kazuo Ishiguro

This book written by Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro might start like a normal story about three children living in a boarding school in England but once the plot twist comes, you won’t be able to put this book down.

This dystopian novel will show you the strength of friendship and love against a world filled with selfishness and cruelty.

This book made me smile and cry my eyes out and it totally blew my mind.

3. The Truth About The Harry Quebert Affair – Joël Dicker

This book by Swiss author Joël Dicker is a real page-turner, the longest book I’ve read but also one of the only books I actually read in just one sitting.

This novel is set in a small town in New Hampshire and follows a young novelist, Marcus Goldman, who is struggling to find inspiration for a new book.

When the body of a fifteen-year-old girl who went missing 33 years before is found buried in the yard of his friend and ex college professor Harry Quebert, Marcus finds the perfect inspiration for his book and will do everything to find out the truth about the case.

From all the people who read this book, I haven’t heard a single person who didn’t like it, this book will totally captivate you and you’ll never see the plot twists coming.

4. The Reader (Der Vorleser) – Bernhard Schlink

This german book set after the second world war follows the story of a fifteen-year-old german teenager, Michael, who falls in love with a woman who is twice his age.

This book is divided in three parts, following Michael’s story but also showing us the situation of postwar Germany and the new generation’s attemp to understand the Holocaust.

Whether or not you’ve already seen the movie based on the book that got Kate Winslet an Academy Award for Best Actress, it is totally worth reading it, I absolutely adored it and it made me see many things from a new point of view.

5. 1984 – George Orwell

This book is a classic, but if you’ve never read it, I highly recommend it to you.

Written seventy years ago by English author George Orwell this dystopian novel is set in one of the three big “super-states” that rule the world.

The leader, called the Big Brother, has eyes everywhere, and every citizen’s movement is registered 24/7.

In this world where everything is forbidden Winston and Julia, the two main characters, will use their love as their only weapon to save the only remains of humanity.

This book is so deep and won’t leave your thoughts for weeks, what seemed like a totally fictional reality is in fact so much closer to our reality than we think.
